I’ll dink to that!

Peachtree City pickleballers celebrated a major step forward at Thursday’s City Council Workshop.

Peachtree City Mayor Kim Learnard and the City Council awarded $214,000 for the design and construction management of 18 new pickleball courts at Meade Athletic Complex located off Rockaway Road and Highway 74.

The city also released a preliminary timeline for design and construction of the courts. Site grading will begin in late October, court construction in November, and court surfacing and fencing in January. The courts then have to sit for 28 days before they can be played on, and are due to be completed in February of 2026.

Before the design is finalized, residents will have their chance to weigh in on the details.

“Members of the Peachtree City-Fayette Pickleball Club have tremendous expertise and have played in facilities across Georgia and in other states, so they, along with the general public, will be able to offer input on design items such as placement for bleachers, sun shades, drinking fountains, fencing between the courts and more,” Mayor Learnard said.

Funding for the pickleball courts will come from the most recent SPLOST passed by voters in March of 2023.

Dozens of pickleball players were on hand for the vote and erupted into applause when the measure passed unanimously.

Peachtree City resident Michelle Bahr noted it will make the sport accessible to more players. “The important part is public pickleball courts because so many people can’t afford memberships, and we are a community that stands for doing good things for the community,” she said.

The Peachtree-Fayette Pickleball Club, which boasts approximately 700 members, has shown up in numbers to City Hall since this process began. One constant presence has been club president Lloyd Smith.

“I want to thank the City Council…Thank you all for listening,” he said.
